The Zuari River in Goa greeted us with the first blush of morning light — calm waters flowing silently through rich mangrove forests. Though my primary purpose for visiting Goa was to attend a Ramco Cement Dealer Conference, my passion for birds gently changed the course of the morning. With excitement in my heart, I planned an early bird photography session, hoping nature would surprise me.
The journey along the river felt like entering another world — a world ruled not by concrete and machines, but by wings, tides and whispers of the mangroves. The region is home to around 15 types of Avicennia (different species of mangroves), each supporting a unique ecosystem. Under the knowledgeable guidance of experts who shared incredible insights about these forests and the birds relying on them, every moment became a learning experience.
And then… the moment I had dreamed of arrived! A Black-capped Kingfisher — a rare jewel of Indian wetlands — suddenly appeared on a perfect perch. Its striking blue wings, crimson bill, and glossy black cap turned the dull riverbank into a canvas of vibrant colours. My heart raced as I clicked. Each frame captured not just a bird, but a story, an emotion and an unforgettable memory.
Adding more glory to that moment, I was in the wonderful company of Dr. D. M. Kamath Sir, a passionate and respected birder. His presence, knowledge, and enthusiasm made the experience even more enriching. We both admired the beauty in silence — a silence that spoke thousands of words that morning.
This photograph is not just a picture in my collection — it is a treasure of experience, a symbol of curiosity that led me from a business conference hall… to the heart of nature's paradise.
A reminder that whenever passion calls, we must follow, because some of life's best memories are found between plans, in the unexpected joy of the wild.
