Field notes·1 min read

One peaceful early morning, along with my birding friends Madhushekar and Suresh Kamath, I reached the beautiful grasslands of Hesaraghatta to begin our birdwatching journey. The cool breeze, the golden light of sunrise, and the awakening sounds of nature created a perfect beginning for the day.

As we slowly explored the open landscape, nature gifted us a memorable moment. Perched gracefully on the delicate branch of a small plant sat the magnificent Indian Roller — the proud State Bird of Karnataka. Its vibrant shades of blue, turquoise, and brown glowed beautifully under the soft morning light, making the bird appear like a living jewel of the wilderness.

The bird remained calm and patient, generously allowing us enough time to observe, compose, and capture its elegant poses through our cameras. Every click of the shutter carried excitement, admiration, and gratitude for the beauty unfolding before us.

That morning was not only about photographing a beautiful bird. It also became a valuable learning experience for me. My friend Madhushekar from Bangalore shared simple yet meaningful guidance on how to improve wildlife photography — from understanding light and angles to patiently waiting for the perfect moment. His words reminded me that wildlife photography is not merely about cameras or lenses, but about observation, patience, respect for nature, and the ability to connect with the wild silently.

The sight of the Indian Roller perched gently against the morning sky remains one of my cherished memories from Hesaraghatta. A small bird on a tiny branch, a few friends united by passion, and the quiet lessons of nature. Together they created a beautiful chapter in my journey through wildlife photography.
