Field notes·1 min read

The calm waters of Kodi, a small beach near Kundapur, sparkled in the soft glow of dawn. Our birding group began early from the mangroves, eager to explore this hidden paradise where countless migratory birds and waders visit every season.

We hired a small fishing boat, guided by a humble boatman named Narayana. He knew nothing about bird photography or the names of the species — he knew only the rhythm of the waves and the secrets of the sea breeze. As we floated along, the golden light revealed a majestic Osprey perched on a wooden pole, its sharp eyes scanning the waters for prey.

The morning turned into a lesson in beauty and simplicity. Narayana watched us with curiosity, slowly learning about birds, lenses, and the joy of patience.

Today, he is no longer just a fisherman. He is “Narayana, the Boatman of Kodi” — now known among birders as a knowledgeable companion, guiding visitors through the waterways of his beloved island with pride and passion.
